Alienware’s 34-inch QD-OLED gaming monitor is $1,299, a totally reasonable price
The Alienware AW3423DW 34-inch QD-OLED display shown at CES 2022 has already been priced. $1,299 seems perfectly reasonable for what many consider an almost perfect gaming monitor, myself included.
This gorgeous monitor has a 3440×1440 resolution and a 21:9 aspect ratio. It supports Nvidia’s G-Sync Ultimate with refresh rates up to 175Hz on DP and 100Hz on HDMI. It includes one DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.0 ports, three USB 3.0 5Gbps ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a line-out jack.
Those would be impressive specs on a VA or IPS screen, but the real selling point is the inclusion of Samsung’s QD-OLED technology. Quantum dot OLED technology is designed to simplify the production of OLED-based TVs and displays (and thus reduce costs), while purportedly offering a wider color gamut. If the price of the Alienware 34in is any indicator, Samsung has made it. QD-OLED technology incorporates all the benefits of OLED displays, including ultra-fast response times, high contrast, and deep blacks. These are features gamers are sure to appreciate.
When you connect your Alienware screen with LG 32EP950-B 32” 4K OLED Display At under $4,000, the Alienware does seem very reasonable. This pricing hinders the adoption of OLED screens in gaming. Furthermore, there seems to be little hope of producing panels smaller than TVs.
Granted, $1,299 isn’t cheap, but it’s a pretty reasonable starting point for a brand-new monitor technology that fits most situations. We can certainly expect more affordable versions from other suppliers in the coming months. A less flashy design with no USB ports or G-Sync support and a 120Hz refresh rate might appeal to a price mainstream buyers can afford.
Let’s hope the Alienware 34 is the first of many very exciting gaming monitors for the rest of 2022.
