Amazon is working on a Blade Runner TV series with Ridley Scott
according to deadline, Amazon Studios is fast-tracking the development of the Blade Runner TV show, tentatively titled Blade Runner: 2099, with original film director Ridley Scott serving as executive producer. The project also features Apple TV’s Shining Girls producer Silka Luisa as lead writer and co-executive producer.
The original Blade Runner was a cult classic that remains a source of inspiration for sci-fi to this day. I loved Dennis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner: 2049, but its blockbuster performance was lacklustre, which seemed to be the last word of a big-budget production in the series, at least until it got another inevitable before the studio revival, no matter how many years later.
It looks like the next try is coming much sooner than I expected. Sci-fi and fantasy streaming shows are popular right now, and while Amazon has had its own success with The Expanse, the show is entering its final season, which may help explain the company’s eagerness to launch a Blade Runner adaptation soon.
If you’re itching for further adventures in the Blade Runner universe, the series also has a place in PC gaming history thanks to Westwood Studios’ excellent 1997 point-and-click adventure spin-off.Nightdive Studios’ remake of the game appears to be on hiatus due to the disappearance of the game’s source code, but the original is Available for purchase on GOG $9.99.
