Callisto Protocol no longer appears in the PUBG universe

Callisto Protocol, one of the most anticipated horror games in years, happens to be our June cover story. One of the more interesting aspects of the project is that it typically takes place in the same universe as the popular battle royale PUBG: Battlegrounds, albeit in the far future and on another planet. To this day, this is no longer the case.

The Callisto Protocol’s creative director, Glen Schofield, announced on Twitter that the game will now unfold in its own stories and novels, rather than PUBG’s.

for reference @CallistoTheGame is its own story and world. It no longer happens in the PUBG universe. It started out as part of the PUBG timeline but grew into its own world. PUBG is great and we still have little surprises for fans, but TCP is its own world, story and universe.

For those unaware, Krafton, the maker of PUBG, is releasing The Callisto Protocol, so the connection was made. This change probably won’t come with huge losses. Even when TCP is connected to PUBG, Schofield always says it’s a distant relationship, and any reference to battle royale is an understatement at best. He reiterated the same in our cover story, stating:

“Our idea of being in the universe at first sounded really good, and then when you start to conceive of your story, we realize, ‘Wow, that’s kind of outrageous.’ Find them, things like Easter eggs.”

Schofield also talks to us about where Callisto Protocol is now in the wider PUBG timeline, and how it affects the game’s fiction and vice versa:

“When we came in, they had a lore team and they were writing this big story, like, ‘Where does PUBG start? Where does it fit in? They wrote this huge timeline, and our writers got involved. We’re sitting on the timeline, but we’re sitting far away, and it’s kind of lonely. So if they make another game, let’s say it’s after our timeline. I think our game will tell us more time than theirs line for more information.”

The Callisto protocol will launch later this year.If you’re excited about the game, keep an eye on it game informer In June, our exclusive online and video coverage began rolling out. Subscribers to the magazine’s digital edition can now read our cover story.
