Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamer Edition is about to switch
Players of the original Chrono Cross have long praised it as one of the most prominent role-playing games of its time. Creative characters, an engaging interdimensional story, and incredibly memorable music make it a game that remains in gamers’ memories decades after its initial release in 1999. Players’ love for the series isn’t going away for who owns the rights to it, as Square Enix just announced that a remaster called Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch.
Whether you’ve played the original and can’t wait to play the updated version, or are looking forward to enjoying Serge’s adventures for the first time, you won’t have to wait too long. The remastered RPG will be released on April 7, and will also be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
Like the original, Chrono Cross will feature the same elemental system of magic and consumables, where players must use elemental abilities to conquer enemies. You’ll still follow Serge, Lynx, and over 40 unforgettable playable characters, as well as a mind-bending story that spans multiple dimensions and timelines. Your choices and recruited characters help shape the ending of the story.
But the new graphics demo is instantly recognisable as an improvement, offering a crisp new demo that significantly improves on the PlayStation original. Other additions include the ability to turn off enemy encounters and a newly enhanced soundtrack.
Of particular interest to longtime fans is the Radical Dreamers side story, which was originally released on Satellaview (Super Famicom’s satellite modem peripheral) and only in Japan. Text-based adventures help build the world and characters of the larger Chrono Cross game.
In a slew of new announcements from Nintendo today, the reveal of Chrono Cross is sure to turn heads for longtime cosplay fans. If you’ve never played it (or heard its staggering scores), it’s worth taking the time to give it a try this spring.
