Destiny 2 tower stolen, but NPCs don’t seem to notice

Destiny 2Tower was caught in a darkness called Endless Night at the beginning of the Splicer season. But with the weekly reset on June 22, things got a lot worse. The Meito Square is currently infested with Taken Bright and Goop. But tower civilians, even characters like Commander Zavala and Sir Shax, say nothing about it.

The change was obvious when I first landed on the tower this week. A huge taken ball floats between the passages in the courtyard. You can actually stand on it and get a great view of the traveler. More bright balls are scattered around the courtyard, with bubbling goops on the floor every few feet. Get an energy arc between the two points of the tower, making it look like Saturn’s ring is in front of it.

It’s a cool and uneasy image to load. Towers are usually a safe place, but while hunting for Vault, this makeover certainly doesn’t calm my mind.

The problem with Taken Tower is that the NPCs and main characters don’t seem to be aware of it at all. Humans are still scattered in the courtyard, complaining about Last City. Rahool still decrypts my engrams and gives me the usual greetings as I approach him. There’s a Taken Bright pool on the roof of the Eververse store, threatening to eat inside and own Tess, but if I get too close, she gives me the same game.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this transformation is the complete lack of Zavala’s comments. As soon as I landed on Taken Tower, I walked to Vanguard Commander to see what was happening and literally bumped into Taken Blight along the way. But when I interacted with him, he stared at the traveler, saying his same usual lines. I understand that Lance Reddick is a busy person, but Bungy didn’t even provide a pop-up text with commentary on the giant Taken Bright, two feet away from Zavala’s ass.

Bungie has done a great job of environmental storytelling over the past year. When the Almighty crashed last spring, Zavala stood in his usual place, but he was looking up at the sky with our others. Darkness envelops the entire tower and always reminds us of what is happening in the story. However, there is no follow-up from surrounding characters as to how hard Taken Tower will attack immediately.

Savathun is somewhere in the last city and is almost certainly behind the new look of the tower. Quria, Savathun’s right-handed Vex minion, seems to be a big issue this season. Dangerous things are usually happening in a safe place, but are normal humans still allowed in the tower courtyard?

Adding Taken Blight to the tower is a big change, but as the tower’s regular suspects continue to greet, everything becomes a bit flatter.
