EA steps down as publisher of free-to-play game Knockout City

knockout city Studio Velan Studios has announced that it will self-publish the game after the start of Year 2.

The game will also transition to free-to-play this spring, which the studio says is the “natural next step” for it to take over publishing duties and work more closely with the community.

Until the game is free to play, you will still need an EA account to play, and your data will be handled in accordance with EA’s Privacy and Cookie Policy.

“We have exciting plans for Knockout City, and an internal release will allow us to fully realize our vision for the game’s long-term future,” the studio said. “There’s a lot to look forward to because this is just the beginning.”

Velan said there’s still a lot of work to be done behind the scenes to get it ready for free-to-play, and the team is “going all out” on change. As such, Season 5 will have a little less content than previous seasons.

There will be no new Brawl Passes for Season 5, fewer season packs and new cosmetics, and no new maps or balls. However, this content shift is only temporary, with a new Brawl Pass, more cosmetic items, and a ton of new features coming to Season 6.

New maps and balls will appear in future seasons.

Next season is Season 5: The Best Collection This will celebrate the best of Knockout City’s 1st year, bringing back superpowers, chain reactions, basketball brawls and more. You can also look forward to new customizations, a new special event for the spring with exclusive unlocks, a new season of the league, and many other goodies.

After Season 5, Knockout Year 2 will begin, when the game will be free to play.

To thank the community, Velan has created a special Season 6 Loyalty Bundle for those who have already purchased the game prior to Season 6’s release, which includes exclusive Legendary Skins, XP boosts, and 2,000 Holograms.

Since its release a year ago, the game has included 32 different playlists, nine maps, six special balls, plus snowballs from Snowbrawl Fight, over 1,200 customizations, tons of features, and more.
