If we’ve learned anything from Marvel’s comics and cinematic universes, it’s that the world is always expanding. New villains will always appear, and new heroes will always pop up to stop them. Crystal Dynamics took the same approach with its game starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Marvel’s Avengers launches with six playable characters, but that’s far from all the heroes we can control. Crystal Dynamics says all playable characters will be added for free, but additional upgrades for those characters may cost money.
Check out all the characters you can play in Marvel’s Avengers, as well as all the upcoming heroes.

After the disaster at the game’s opening, Kamala Khan discovers new powers that allow her to grow and stretch her body in unique ways, helping her fend off enemies and traverse the environment. As the protagonist of Marvel’s Avengers, her goal is to regroup outlaw heroes and save the world once again.
Captain America, the leader of the Avengers, is killed in the opening sequence. His loss is felt throughout the story as the Avengers work to unite and make his sacrifice count.
The billionaire tech genius in a metal suit has a whole arsenal of gadgets and weapons to fight the forces of evil.
The former S.H.I.E.L.D. super spy is a martial arts and weapons expert with gadgets to support her skills.
The mighty Thor wields his legendary hammer, Mjolnir, as well as the mighty lightning conductor.
The mild-mannered Bruce Banner transforms into a giant green rampaging monster that can rampage through enemies and environments with ease.
Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) – December 8, 2020
Clint Barton’s disciple joins as the first post-launch hero. As a Clint-trained professional archer, Kate possesses similar abilities to Clint’s, but with her own unique moves and gear, including Razor Arrows, Shot Arrows, Explosive Arrows, and Smoke Arrows. She can also use warp arrows to teleport across the battlefield, generate holograms, and apply quantum energy to her attacks. She joins as part of Operation: Take AIM, a story centered on finding Clint Barton, with the super-adapter standing in her way as a new Omega-level antagonist with all the powers of the Avengers.
Hawkeye (Clint Barton) – March 18, 2021
Missing since the events of A-Day, Clint Barton resurfaces as part of Operation: The Future Is Imperfect. Set in a future where a world has been devastated by Kerry and nuclear war, Operation: Future Imperfect pits Hawkeye against a mad master, a shapeshifting version of the Hulk who combines Banner’s intelligence with the power of the Hulk. In this theoretical future, the Master has killed all the superheroes and supervillains, and it’s up to Hawkeye to end his reign.
Black Panther – August 17, 2021
Black Panther joins the Avengers in the first post-launch content drop big enough to be considered an expansion. The Wakanda Wars expansion follows King T’Challa and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against an invading mercenary army led by Klaw and Crossbones.
Spider-Man – November 30, 2021
After several teasers, Crystal Dynamics is finally bringing Spider-Man to the PlayStation version of Marvel’s Avengers. Instead of delivering Spider-Man through expansions like Black Panther or actions like Hawkeye and Kate Bishop, Spider-Man joins the superhero squad without story missions or engine cutscenes.
Before her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut Thor: Love and Thunder, Crystal Dynamics announced that Jane Foster: Mighty Thor will join the team. We don’t have many details on Jane’s addition, but Crystal Dynamics says her moves will have a lot in common with Thor, though she’ll have some elements that set her apart.
Of course, with so many superheroes on the roster, Marvel’s Avengers needs a steady stream of evil threats worthy of the team’s attention. Like its roster of heroes, Marvel’s Avengers has been steadily adding to its roster of villains. Here are the characters you can expect to fight as you play the base game and its various post-launch content.
