Explore the full history of Supergiant Games Pyre’s video game science

We’ve emerged from the depths of the Bioshock franchise to start a new video game season! We’re doing it differently this time because we’re talking about the developer’s gameplay, rather than covering a single game series. The studio is Supergiant Games, a well-known indie developer of Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and Hades. This week, we continue our season with an analysis of the 2017 Pyre.

Pyre was released on June 25, 2017. Following Supergiant’s efforts to create Transistor, the team took a more relaxed “do what you want” approach to Pyre. The game incorporates different elements that reflect the interests of the team, such as a highly fantastical environment, a plethora of engaging characters, rituals in the form of basketball/soccer games, and Oregon Trail-inspired exploration. Tune in to find out how Supergiant made the game’s core “sports” game, its approach to the larger branching narrative (including the ever-changing end credits song), and the Nightwing members we chose to liberate and the members we gave up on the downside .
