God of War Corey Balog says PlayStation Studios convinced Sony to put games on PC
In an interview with Game Informer, creative director Cory Barlog said that the latest wave of PlayStation games coming to PC started with enthusiasm from Sony studios.
“I think it’s the collective of the entire studio saying this is a really good idea. We should look into this,” Balog said. “Eventually, I think it hits that tipping point. When we send out so many suggestion box suggestions, they’re like, ‘I’m tired of hearing all this. Well, we’ll do it.'”
Sony first announced that it will bring exclusive PlayStation games to PC in March 2020, starting with Horizon Zero Dawn. According to God of War’s developers, its PC port will take about two years, meaning it started when Sony released its first PC plans.
As Barlog points out, it makes sense that PlayStation developers are largely inclined to get their games into the hands of more players — imagining a $150 billion company eventually decides to release games on PC is just a matter of Because it’s studio heads haunting it long enough. Sony’s leadership is keen to reach new customers, according to former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Shawn Layden, who left in October 2019.
“When I was there, our strategy was, we need to go where these new customers are, where these new fans might be,” Layden said last year“We need to go where they are… I have to go to their house now because they decided not to come to my house. What’s the best way to go to their house? Why not bring one of our best-selling games?”
Layden said he doesn’t think Sony will start releasing games on PC on day one — if it waits two years to port games to PC, it doesn’t have to risk cannibalizing console sales.
Whether future games will come to PC is still uncertain, according to Barlog, who “has no idea” when the next God of War game, Ragnarok, will arrive. Even if the studio did let Sony try the PC port, it still sounds like they’re not the ones who make the final call.
“Right now, we’re playing one game at a time, watching every game and making sure, ‘Okay, is this the best thing to do?'” Balog said. “We’ll evaluate how well it works. Did people like it? Did we do it right? Did we do something wrong? If we do it again, can we do it better in the future? But at the end of the day, it’s Sony’s Decide.”
