Halo Infinite: 343 industries use Halo 3 character and enemy designs as inspiration

Microsoft and 343 Industries have always been very open, and they hope that Infinite can be traced back to the classic Halo era. It is set on a single Halo ring-Zeta Halo-very similar to the way Halo: Combat Evolved is set on a ring, and the design retains the more streamlined appearance of Bungie’s Halo game. Now, we know this is because of Halo 3 and Halo: Reach is the source of inspiration.

“The mental restart actually makes it easier for us to incorporate some more traditional designs into the characters,” Halo Infinite character and combat director Steve Dyck wrote in a blog post. “One of the best examples of this is the Elites, Grunts, and Jackal. They all have more “legacy” designs than we have in Halo 4 or Halo 5. As far as where we seek inspiration in which part of the heritage, we mainly Around the Halo 3/Halo: Reach time frame, and then combine Banished aesthetics with Halo Infinite artistic direction.”

Halo Infinite’s campaign character art director Bryan Repka added that 343 Industries knew early on that it wanted to “mentally restart” the character of Halo, and doing so meant looking at every character in the franchise. As a result, “every character in Infinity has been redesigned in some way,” Repka said.

“like [Steve Dyck] Mentioned, we really rely on the design of the past,” Repka continued. “We want to go back to the traditional design that made the Halo characters iconic, but we don’t just want to increase their resolution. We hope to add our talents while staying true to our 20-year history. ”

Repka takes Elites as an example-they are larger and bulkier in Halo 4 and 5 compared to the Elites of the older Halo game. Repka stated that 343 Industries “finally reduced their size and gave them a smoother appearance.” So they look “fast, agile, and smart.” The idea is that the elites will once again be in sharp contrast to the larger, more bulky beasts in Infinity.
