discoverer gizmo (opens in new tab)game equipment company highlands (opens in new tab) Working with Sega on some swag based on the company’s golden age, including an absolutely killer keyboard and keycap set. These are another alliance next to Sonic the Hedgehog keyboards sourced at Walmart (opens in new tab) Recently hurt my colleague Jorge Jimenez (probably 2.5 times the price).
The star of the show is definitely Sonic’s Green Hill Zone vista printed on a glorious PBT cap, but I personally prefer the Dreamcast-themed board, with its clean look and directional buttons matching the muted colors of the Dreamcast controller’s face buttons.
The Green Hill Board is great, it’s a PBT keycap, the equivalent of an RGB strip apocalypse. Not a tasteful understatement like the Dreamcast board.I have to mention Duel Sonic/Shadow Board (opens in new tab) Too. I’ll never use it, but I have to appreciate it from a distance as apocalyptic hits perfect.

Both myself and PC Gamer executive editor Tyler Wilde have a vague comment on the blank keyboard (opens in new tab)—even as a touch typist, it’s nice to still be able to trick and reposition yourself here and there—but all three keycap sets have characters printed on the front, facing the user, not the top, which is between aesthetics A nice compromise and function.
The 65% layout (reduced keypad and function keys to take up less space) also really worked for me. I use it myself, and while I occasionally miss the function keys, duplicating them with multikey shortcuts works well, and I never regret giving up on the numpad.
However, I don’t like Higround’s switching options for the board. They use speed silver, according to the chart Construction of the Dreamcast Board (opens in new tab), which is kind of like a “player switch”. They are linear like Cherry MX Red, but highly sensitive to better enhanced Wood Tier IV competitive pairing responses. In practice, my K/D ratio stayed the same with Speed Silvers, and the ultra-responsive drive just messed up my typing.I prefer harder linear switches like that horrible name Gateway Oil King (opens in new tab) on my board.
Higround also sells the keycaps as separate kits, and even has extra keys for full-size boards, so you can put them on your own switches if you want. Still, if you want them, you have to hurry. This limited “capsule collection” Goes live today, August 5 at 12:00 PM PT (opens in new tab).
