This isn’t the first time Verma has worked at Intel, where he was chief SoC architect from 1999 to 2013. There is, no doubt, an open checkbook!
The news is just the latest in a series of aggressive moves by Intel. It’s not just employee acquisitions, but company acquisitions, huge capital investments, and a willingness to move out of Intel’s traditional markets.
Just announced the acquisition of Tower Semiconductor for $5.4 billion, investing in manufacturing capacity in the US and abroad, plans to open its foundry to third parties, and possibly even licensing the x86 architecture. Intel really has been smooth sailing, and with Pat Gelsinger faltering, there are sure to be more high-profile employee acquisitions in the coming months.
