Magic: Party on the streets of New Capena turns into a life of crime later this month

The latest Magic set takes Planeswalkers to a whole new plane and the bustling city of angels and demons known as New Capena. The city is run by five families, each headed by demons, who control every aspect of the metropolis’ economy. Streets of New Capenna takes full advantage of the raucous golden age of the ’20s, with glitz and glamour juxtaposed with vicious criminals, all vying for control of a mysterious magical substance called Halo.

You can read the full text of this story Magic: The Gathering Website, centered on the planeswalker Espes, who was sent to the plane of New Capena by Ajani Goldmane to find out if she came from here. There, she begins to wonder why there are only demons in the city when the angels also help build the new Capena. While trying to solve this conundrum, she meets Giada, a teen with some connection to the Halo substance that every crime family wants to get their hands on.

Also on this plane are Vivien Ried, a green-centric planeswalker who wields a powerful weapon called the Ark Bow, and the demon Onyx Ob Nixilis, who exacerbates tensions and conflicts between the new Capena clan by hoarding his own separately stored treasured halo.

crime family in new capena

New Capenna is run by five demon-run crime families, each with a specific role in the city. All five families use the three-color magic color pie to give character to their roles in the city and on the battlefield. All five families have a new mechanic to support the theme to suit how it works in New Capenna.

The Obscura – White/Blue/Black

The Obscura, a faction founded by the wizards of the Old Capena, are mystics and fortune tellers who control the flow of information in the New Capena.

Mechanic – Indulge: Draw a card, then discard a card. If you discard a nonland card this way, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.

Master – Blue/Black/Red

A former nobleman of old Cape Na, the Masters are a family of vampires engaged in professional assassination. They also collect and curate, serving as archivists of New Capena’s past, while keeping the same city history in the shadows.

Mechanic – Casualties (N): As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may sacrifice a creature of power N or greater. When you do, copy the spell.

Riveter – Black/Red/Green

The riveters are a criminal family responsible for most of the manual labor in the city of New Capena. This faction can build, demolish and rebuild cities effortlessly. Riveter builds on the tradition of the workers’ union and values numbers, loyalty and the strength of mutual support.

Mechanic – Blitz: [Pay a cost] If you cast this spell for a blitz cost, it gains haste and “When this creature dies, draw a card.” Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step.

Cabaletti – Red/Green/White

Parties and celebrations are what Cabaletti is best at, originating from the druids and bards before the New Capena boom. They control the city’s pop culture, from parties to entertainment venues and restaurants, and Cabaretti can and will support those they love and ensure that others fall out of favor in the public eye.

Mechanic – Alliance: Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, [an effect happens].

Broker – Green/White/Blue

As a similar legal element in New Capenna, brokers utilize a form of contractual protection. They consisted of the paladins of the Old Cape, maintaining some false veils of the New Cape, with a set of rules and order. With this facade, the broker maintains a precarious peace among the city’s five families.

Mechanic – Shield Counter: If a creature with a shield counter would be destroyed or deal damage, remove a defense counter from it instead.

Back to Mechanics

Hideout X – When this permanent enters the battlefield, look at the top X cards of your library, exile one card face down, then put the rest on the bottom in random order. When you meet the conditions of this permanent, you may play the exiled card without paying its mana cost.

Cycling – [Pay a cost and discard this card]: Draw a card.

This release of Rue New Capena is a little different, and in my opinion better. The desktop pre-release will take place on April 22, a week before the series launches on digital platforms. The new Capenna will be available at Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online on April 28, with a full release the following day, April 29.
