When Miyamoto announced the new details of the upcoming Mario animated film, he dropped a bomb on Nintendo fans who watched today’s Nintendo live broadcast. The film is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2022, and Chris Pratt will personally voice the platform plumber.
Joining Pratt is a frankly ridiculous cast of jokes that you may have seen in other animated films before:
- Mario-Chris Pratt
- Luigi-Charlie Day
- Peaches-Anya Taylor-Joy
- Bowser-Jack Black
- Donkey Kong-Seth Rogen
- Toad — Keegan-Michael Key
- Cranky Kong — Fred Armison
- Kamek — Kevin Michael Richardson
- Spike-Sebastian Manisco
So many first-line stars signed with Nintendo Movies surprised many fans, especially considering Mario’s last movie. To be fair, video game movies are now a hot commodity. Heck, this is not even the only video game movie that Jack Black has dubbed him right now-he also plays Claptrap in the upcoming “Borderland” movie.
If you ask yourself, “Hold the phone, Mario already has a voice actor, his name is Charles Damn Martinet,” Nintendo said Martinet will appear in the film’s “surprise guest appearance,” which may or may not comfort you.
Mario Movies is a collaboration between Nintendo and the animation company Illumination, the latter famous for the movie “Despicable Me”. The directors of this movie are Aaron Horvath and Michael Yelnik, they are behind the young Titans! The show and its movies, let’s go to Teen Titans! Go to the cinema.
It’s weird to hear Martinet’s Mario talk in a full movie, but I suspect it would be even stranger to hear the voice of the Star Lord speak from Mario’s mouth. (We also admit that Mario is not a legendary PC game franchise, but this is a considerable deal. Technically speaking, there was a Mario game on PC that was forgotten.)
