Overwatch McCree has a new name: Cole Cassidy
Overwatch’s resident gunman finally got a new name: Jesse McRae is gone, replaced by an honest cowboy named Col Cassidy.
Blizzard said in an announcement tweet: “Avoiding his past means avoiding yourself, and each year only widens the gap between who he was and who he has become.” “But in every cowboy’s In life, there will always be times when he must stop and show his position.
“In order to make this new “Overwatch” better-to make things right-he must be honest with his team and himself. He rode a cowboy at sunset, while Col Cassidy was Facing the world at dawn.”
The new name stems from allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination that are prevalent in Activision Blizzard, including the firing of Diablo 4’s chief level designer Jesse McCray. The Overwatch character is named after him. Blizzard said in August that it would rename the character to “more representative of what Overwatch represents.”

This change is clearly necessary-many people in the community are calling for some Overwatch commentators to stop using the name in mid-August and instead choose to simply call him “cowboy”-but it actually It is also very suitable for Overwatch knowledge. Someone in the past suggested that Jesse McRae was not actually his real name: Sombra mentioned it in the following interaction, and Cassidy replied: “I don’t know what you heard, but my name is not Joel.”
No it is rape. its not bad, right? The entire Joel reference may just be an endorsement of the fact that Joel was McCree’s placeholder before Overwatch came out, but it seems to open the door to this new name change in the story.
Following allegations of sexual abuse, Blizzard has renamed many other characters in its game, including several World of Warcraft NPCs also named after McCree, as well as other characters named by former Diablo 4 game director Louis Barriga, former World of Warcraft Designer Jonathan LeCraft, former creative director Alex Afrasiabi, and recent cannibal corpse lead singer George’Corpsegrinder’ Fisher, he is commemorated in World of Warcraft as the orc task giver Gorge the Corpsegrinder. Blizzard has since stated that it will no longer name characters after real people.
Cole Cassidy (probably his real name) will take his place in the Overwatch team on October 26th.
