In May 2019, Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game publisher Panic revealed that they are developing their own game handheld, Playdate. This cute device has been talked about for its bright yellow color, unique analog cranks, and simple yet compelling graphics for all digital software. It’s been a while since we heard something about it, but today Panic aired a video full of updates on the device that ended its silence, the first slate game, big accessories, and its price. And showed off the pre-purchase. Order window.
Whether the game builds or breaks the platform, Playdate’s first library consists of a collection of 24 original games, Panic Dub Season 1. These games consist of titles designed with ingenious mechanisms that take advantage of the unique features of the system, such as the crank (a type of analog stick). All Season 1 games are free and owners receive two games per week for 12 weeks. You can see some of the games in action in the presentation below (marked 3:35), but panic owns by not sharing game details, including titles, until the game reaches the system. I like to surprise people.
Panic has a long list of indie developers who are currently tinkering with Playdate games. Notable creators include a new game by Return of the Obra Dinn creator Lucas Pope (read here) and Bennett Foddy, famous for Getting Over It. Panic has also partnered with up-and-coming studios in the marginalized community under the guidance of development studio Sweet Baby, Inc. The company says that in the future, creators will be able to independently sell Playdate titles that can be sideloaded to handhelds. Other distribution methods will be explained at a later date.
Panic has released a free game creation tool called Pulp to further accelerate game production. With this all-in-one tool, designers can develop Playdate games using only a web browser, tinkering with graphics, scripting, and creating sheet music. When the game is complete, you can upload it to Playdate. Pulp will be available later this year.
Panic also revealed Playdate’s first accessory, the Playdate Stereo Dock (pictured above). It magnetically connects to Playdate, acts as a battery charger, and features Bluetooth speakers to enhance and improve gaming audio. The dock sits on your desk and comes with two nice pen holders that you can use to store Panic’s official Playdate ballpoint pen (bundled in the dock). Panic has also partnered with online radio station Poolsuite FM to create an app of carefully selected summer songs that players can listen to from the stereo dock. Nothing is said about the price or release date of the Stereo Dock.
However, we know that Playdate itself costs $ 179. Of course, the price includes the first season of the game. You can order a Playdate protective case for $ 29, or you can buy both together for $ 199.
When can I buy a play date? Panic did not disclose the release date, but will start pre-ordering in July. The exact time for next month is unknown, but Panic promises not to surprise customers and announces the pre-order date a week before the live. Advance reservations will be made at the following locations. play.date..
Panic guarantees fans that Playdate will never sell out after the pre-order date. We will continue to receive orders and ship them as soon as they arrive from the factory. Of course, those who order early can get a handheld sooner. Panic also eases expectations by reminding customers that something could go wrong and Playdate could take a long time to arrive due to a global shortage of parts and COVID. I would like to. With that in mind, Panic says that pre-orders can be canceled at any time for any reason.Panic promises to share up-to-date information about playdates in the coming weeks..
