PlayStation reveals 11 minutes of Spider-Man 2 gameplay
The PlayStation showcase ended today with a bang, with Insomniac sharing an 11-minute gameplay demo of Spider-Man 2, which is coming to PS5 this year and eventually PC.
The demo was reminiscent of the way Insomnias presented its first Spider-Man game: a complete mission that included combat, stealth, and a destructive chase between Spider-Man and a villain in a helicopter.
At the time, the quest’s linearity and quick events had some people worrying that the PlayStation version of the hero would play like the Uncharted games, but now that I know what Insomniac’s open-world Spider-Man is, it took me 11 minutes to pour out more than details. It looks like you’ll be switching between Peter and Miles on a regular basis in Spider-Man 2, though you don’t seem to be able to swap characters at any time. At this point in the game, Peter has donned the black Venom suit, and it looks like he’ll have an all-new combat system built around the power of the symbiotic tendrils. Peter also deployed a new traversal technology that I can’t wait to use: Wingsuits.
Miles, on the other hand, might be the more gadget-focused Spider this time around. On his part, we see a new invisibility gadget: a special web transmitter that creates wires that Miles can walk on.
The demo also set the stage for Spider-Man 2’s story. One of the oldest villains in Spider-Man comics, hunter kraven, in town after Dr. Curt Connors, at which point he has turned into a lizard. Pete and Miles intervene to protect Connors, and at the end we see Miles upset with Peter’s increasingly aggressive behavior since donning the Venom suit. We can all guess how that goes, but I love these versions of these characters so much that I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
Spider-Man 2 is coming to PS5 later this year. Hopefully the PC port wait time won’t be too long.
