Qualcomm, known for its Snapdragon ARM SoC, claims that the company is “very capable of becoming the platform of choice for personal computers, in the inevitable transition to ARM.” The comments are in the company’s Introduction to Investor Day 2021. This is a very big statement.
Snapdragon system-on-chip (SoC) has very good performance per watt and is usually used in high-performance mobile devices. This is a common feature of ARM devices, but they do not have the raw performance that competes with existing CPUs from Intel and AMD. If the new ARM core from Nuvia, a recently acquired unit of Qualcomm, can provide the performance you expect from a good-spec PC or high-performance gaming laptop, this situation may change.

If Qualcomm can break into the high-performance computing market, it will keep Intel, AMD and Nvidia vigilant, especially as their products tend to higher power consumption levels. It is always welcome to provide consumers with more competition and better choices. Qualcomm is expected to release its high-performance Nuvia design in 2023 and a prototype in mid-2022.
