Square Enix launches minimalist RPG Dungeon Encounters

Square Enix relies on the creators of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system of Final Fantasy to create a new and unique RPG experience, which will be launched within two weeks. Hiroyuki Ito is famous for ATB and director “Final Fantasy 12 Zodiac Age”, he leads this minimalist dungeon exploration game called Dungeon Encounters.

Dungeon Encounters requires players to explore grid-based mazes, in the process you will find allies, fight monsters and gain abilities. Traveling through these barren maps seems to be an important part of the dungeon encounter. Each square you move will be counted, and the total number of completed maps will reward ability points. Ability to strategically change the position of the enemy or player in the dungeon to avoid conflicts or go to hard-to-reach parts of the game board.

You guessed it, the battle is carried out with the Active Time Battle system. Adventure in the maze, you will meet various characters to join your team. The trailer above shows a large number of potential friends doing grid exploration. These party members are not only exclusive to humanoid adventurers, but also include a sword-wielding dog, a black panther, and a rather large Chinchilla-like character that I love so far, named Sir Cat.

We don’t have to wait a long time to study Dungeon Encounters in depth. It will be released on PlayStation 4, Switch and Steam on October 14.

The recent trend of exploring RPG systems in minimalist visual spaces is interesting, but not entirely new. The Voice of Cards: Roar of the Dragon Island was announced last week, a similar game that relies on card aesthetics rather than sprites or 3D models of characters. As long as the playing system is interesting, I will go all out. What do you think of Dungeon Encounters and its streamlined appearance? Let us know in the comments!
