Starfield will come with a handy robotic companion called VASCO

Starfield’s latest developer diary discusses game developers’ favorite companions.


“It’s always interesting to see who the breakthrough character is and who the player starts to be drawn to,” says lead artist Istvan Pely. “Even early on in the process, before we had the full set of characters, people in the studio started leaning towards robots. Going to VASCO.

“He’s your sidekick, but he’s a robot. But all of a sudden, everyone on the team decided, ‘I want to have a relationship with VASCO. He’s so cool. He’s so funny.’ He became a breakthrough role, and we’re just getting started.”

Expedition robots are built to meet the needs of Constellation missions. The group’s companion is a practical heavy-industry machine that’s perfect for space travel.

The VASCO is very reliable, able to traverse rough terrain, can tow survival gear, and has great payload capacity for extended overland travel. VASCO is defensive if needed, but the bot’s main role is peace.

Starfield will be available exclusively on Xbox Series X/S and PC on November 11, and will be an Xbox Game Pass game on day one.
