Valve’s portable Steam Deck has hit the market, making a splash in the portable gaming world. The new handheld gaming PC even has many enthusiasts questioning whether this is the answer to something like a gaming laptop. However, the Steam Deck isn’t the only portable PC on the market, with some competitors looking for innovations in Valve’s future products.
OneXPlayer is a brand known for making some very high-quality portables, but even in our recent review of the One-Netbook OneXPlayer Mini, the benefits of the Steam Deck were clear.
While these are very beautiful devices, the prices are affordable, and Steam Deck’s cheaper options and specific software are helping it to gain popularity rapidly. However, if you find yourself wishing to offer a better Steam deck, OneXPlayer may be coming soon.
Currently, OneXPlayers runs Windows, which is great for familiarity, but doesn’t necessarily take full advantage of the form factor. Steam Decks is running a version of Linux called SteamOS that uses Proton to let games run on the Linux platform and helps outpace some competitors in general usage and compatibility.
According to an interview Microcomputer, OneXPlayer is looking for a future Linux-based solution, maybe even SteamOS. That means we may start to see really good portable PC gaming machines running optimized software.
Due to changes to the cache, Elden Ring was recently tuned to run better on the SteamOS platform. Such fixes implemented on portable machines mean that any platform that can take advantage of specialized software should benefit. In short, the viability of all brands of portable PCs is likely to explode.
In the case of OneXPlayer, that could mean a boon for high-end portable machines. One of the main downsides we’ve found with the mini is that some games won’t work, while others can be fiddly. SteamOS will likely fix many of these issues, finally giving these advanced machines a chance to feel it inside and out.
Given the difficulties involved in locking down Steam decks right now, a little more competition can only be a good thing.
