Not long ago, in the same galaxy we all inhabit, Respawn Entertainment strayed from its first-person shooter roots to create Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The third-person action game is the studio’s first attempt to tackle the coveted Star Wars license, five years after making an original adventure game Revenge of the Sith. It stars the apprentice turned trashman Cal Kestis (by shameless Star Cameron Monaghan managed to escape Order 66’s Jedi purge. After he was banished from the Sith, he set out to find artifacts that would locate power-sensitive children while avoiding the capture of hunters by elite Jedi Inquisitors.
The game combines lightsaber combat with a suite of Force abilities. Inspired by FromSoftware’s Soul series, encounters are challenging and require a strategic blend of blocking and parrying to prevail. Meanwhile, individual planets take on a Metroid-inspired progression, with players unlocking the ability to travel back to previously inaccessible areas.
Fallen Order was released on November 15, 2019 and was a major financial success. It also offers a savings for single-player fans, and evidence for EA, which is increasingly focused on multiplayer, that linear story-driven experiences can still make big bucks. As the sequel is reportedly in the works, we’re taking a fresh look at this gem of the Star Wars video game pantheon.
