Switch is the best-selling console in the US in 2021, Call of Duty: Pioneer is the best-selling game
2021 is over and there’s still plenty of year-end sales figures related to video games coming out, and today the NPD Group, which tracks sales of games, consoles and gaming accessories, released December and 2021 sales figures for UPS.
The Switch comes out after 2021, and the NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella revealed on Twitter that it’s the best-selling hardware in the U.S. today in unit sales and dollar sales. The Switch was also the top-selling platform in December, tied with the PlayStation 5 last month in terms of sales. That means more Switch consoles are sold, as even the cheapest PS5 is more expensive than the most expensive Switch model. Of course, it’s worth noting that it’s a lot easier to buy a Switch now than a PS5 due to the ongoing shortage of chips.
US NPD HW – The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling hardware platform in December 2021, while the Switch and PlayStation 5 were effectively tied for the month’s dollar sales lead. The Nintendo Switch leads both unit sales and dollar sales of hardware in 2021.

Overall, December hardware dollar sales fell 3% to $1.3 billion compared to December 2020. However, despite the decline, full-year hardware spending in 2021 will reach $6.1 billion, up 14% from 2020.
On the gaming front, Call of Duty: Pioneer was December’s top-selling game, the newest addition to the long-running Activision Blizzard, soon to be an Xbox, franchise. According to Piscatella, this led to Call of Duty being the best-selling video game franchise tracking dollar sales for the 13th year in a row. Halo Infinite was the second best-selling game of December 2021, which is quite a feat considering that many players didn’t buy the game because it’s available for download on Xbox Game Pass.
In third place are Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which are not only the best-selling games on Switch in December, but also the best-selling Switch games in 2021.
