Texas Chainsaw Massacre game studio says it doesn’t want to “make the same game twice”
The makers of Game 13 of Friday 2017 are taking another crack at the form of asymmetric terror with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The new game will follow a similar format to Friday the 13th and its popular rival Dead By Daylight, but developer Gun Interactive is making one big change: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre will no longer be a killer hunting down a group of survivors, but three.
on the 14th of February blog post, Gun Interactive CEO Wes Keltner explained the change as a gesture to the original film, and it’s also a meaningful game-changer. “We never wanted to make the same game twice. You either innovate or imitate, and I don’t have to tell you which game is better. Everyone at Gun likes to innovate and push the genre forward,” he said.
“How did you do that? Well, when it comes to the design of Texas, we know that 3 vs 4 is different. All the mechanics and features are built around this fundamental rethinking of asymmetric multiplayer Yes. According to Keltner, designing for three killers meant a lot of design time was spent creating balanced levels and killer abilities. “Shadows and objects are created to hide behind, mixed with open rooms to move slowly, and corridors become natural choke points where players can move quickly to find the next hiding spot,” he said.
Keltner also said that having three killers around could be “overwhelming,” and having spent dozens of hours in Dead by Daylight myself, I can believe it. Just having a killer lurking on the map is overwhelming, so I’m curious how TCM will tip the scales for survivors. Maybe survivors will move faster than killers, or maybe there are more ways to “snap” killers behind them with map features?
