Twitch may be implementing new chat options to curb the abuse of streaming media
It seems that Twitch is preparing to introduce new chat options for the host in an attempt to suppress the recent rise in hatred raids.
According to the screenshots of Zach Bussey, a reporter who specializes in anchors, and the anchor Sky Dragon TV, Creators will soon be able to switch the verification level that users need to chat in their stream (thanks, Kotaku). Currently, there is only one email verification option, but the new setting will allow anchors to request email or mobile phone verification.
These options can also be customized to allow full verification of each chatter, or adjust verification requirements based on the age of the account, the length of time they have followed the anchor, or whether they are chatting on someone’s stream for the first time. Subscribers, VIPs and moderators can also be exempted.
Twitch will soon give anchors more control over who can chat on their channel based on email and/or phone verification. Many customizations and contextual restrictions. Exemptions can be provided for subscribers, VIPs and Mods. #TwitchNews pic.twitter.com/sHXmVJNRipSeptember 26, 2021
The underlying changes have occurred after the recent surge in hate attacks, with organized attacks mainly concentrated on minority anchors. The bots flooded the chats of the anchors, spewing racial, sexist, or other slanderous and obscene content. Although chat filters can deny it to some extent, it is still a very easy tool to circumvent for these bots.
The hate raid and the initial slow response of the platform triggered the #ADayOffTwitch protest, and many creators abstained on September 1. Thanks to the joint efforts of smaller streamers and household names such as HasanAbi and Kaceytron, Twitch’s ratings dropped significantly that day. The platform later continued to file lawsuits against two “strongly motivated” perpetrators of hate attacks, believed to be European users known as CruzzControl and CreatineOverdose.
Mobile verification is one of the main recommendations Anchor and report At the peak of these raids, the platform may be taking steps to implement it, which surprises many people. Anchor like Limmy called potential change “Very very good,Cohh Carnage calls them “reliable options for better control of our chat.” “
This is really very good. Reliable options for better control of our chat. It would be nice to have these in place a few months ago, but hey, it’s better to be late than never. 👍 https://t.co/AqHZqq1QNGSeptember 27, 2021
However, this does not mean that the new solution will be perfect. Phone verification can draw a tricky line between the security of streaming media and the privacy of users. This is a detail that some people don’t like to publish online.Others, such as Michelle Boyd, I feel that Twitch still pushes the blame on the streamers to prevent abuse.
Nevertheless, the biggest emotion still seems to be a step in the right direction. Anything that creates a safer and more comfortable environment for the host and their chat will only be a good thing. Although this is not a perfect solution, it shows that Twitch is at least trying to get it right-hope it works.
