Chart data firm GfK has revealed the top 30 game franchises in the UK, Europe’s largest video game market. Nintendo’s iconic Mario is the third-largest video game franchise after FIFA and Call of Duty. Other big games in the top 10 included the acclaimed Rockstar Games, the Grand Theft Auto series, and The Pokemon Company’s Pokemon games and mainline games developed by Game Freak. “An industry that was once considered a niche is now undoubtedly a mainstream market, generating billions of dollars in revenue every year. The characters in these games have become beloved heroes, from Lara Croft to Luigi and Mario, to To Sonic the Hedgehog. The term used in the franchise has entered our vocabulary, and there are quite a few gamers who can wander around the suburbs of San Francisco while driving a stolen car in GTA.”
