World of Warcraft: Dragons bring earth-shaking changes to talents and classes

This week, Blizzard announced Dragonflight, the latest expansion for World of Warcraft, showing off a new race and class combination, the Dracthyr Evoker, and a new land that players will explore on the long-hidden Dragon Island. Some of this week’s reveal isn’t quite as flashy as the playable shape-shifting magic dragon. However, they do provide a better window into the philosophy and priorities of the World of Warcraft team in the near future. I spoke with Jackie Wiley, Dragonflight Senior Game Designer, about the complete talent system rework for all classes in 10.0, as well as major class changes.

“We’re borrowing power from this expansion to develop our evergreen system, but also to allow players to express the way they want,” Wiley said. The concept of “borrowed power” pops up frequently in the Warcraft community, it Drawing on Legion’s artifact weapons, Battle for Azeroth’s Azerite armor, and Shadowlands’ Covenant skills and soulbinding systems, all of which provide players with new stat boosts, spells, and non-core tier advancements and skills inherent in the talent system. At the start of the most recent expansion, much of your character’s powers were wiped away, leaving major holes in class rotation and utilities to be filled by the next borrowed power mechanic in the new expansion. Dragonflight won’t have such a system, according to Wiley, and Blizzard has instead opted to learn from those borrowed power systems to recreate more classic flair.

Currently, World of Warcraft players automatically gain most spells and abilities as they level up, and they have only a few options for their preferred playstyle for their class specialization. Every 15 or so levels, you can choose from one of three talents at a particular tier; some offer modifications to existing abilities, while others grant new skills entirely. However, with only six real choices per character at a given time, there aren’t many ways for players to express and customize for a given class. That all changes in Dragonflight.

Talent trees are making a massive return to World of Warcraft, giving players the opportunity to infuse valuable talent points into their chosen skills at every level. The earliest iteration of the World of Warcraft talent system provided a tree for each spec, where players could distribute their points across all available trees, enhancing specific class abilities. Dragonflight, however, will have two trees: one for overall class utility and identity, and one for the specialization chosen for that character. You won’t necessarily be able to make mages as frost/fire hybrid spellcasters, but the new system should provide greater granularity for players looking to minimize/maximize their talents and customize how their characters play.

Each time they level up, players gain either a class talent point or a specialization talent point, which can be used to activate talents on a specific tree. The concept isn’t new, but it’s a refreshing return in form, and one that’s closer to what players like me yearned for before World of Warcraft Classic.Each level has such options – my tiny rewards and appearances put up My role – in theory, to make the leveling experience more fulfilling, not a chore, while going through old content into the current expansion.

It’s not just the old way of doing talent for change.

“We’ve learned a lot from and inspired by all the systems in the past few expansions that we hold dear to our hearts, such as Azerite armor, conduits, soulbound, legendary items,” Wei said. Lee said. “So you might see some friendly things you remember scattered across your talent tree.”

Those friendly things are various Covenant skills that may become permanent fixtures of a class, though no specific promises are made. As an example, the druid’s full moon spell was transformed from the Legion’s artifact weapon power to join the class’s roster of valid spells.

Like talent, World of Warcraft classes are going through some major overhauls. Details haven’t been fully revealed, but crafting and collecting and their importance to player fantasy and economy in the game are undergoing major changes. Crafting occupations such as blacksmithing or leatherworking will have their own specialization tracks, allowing players to focus on specific aspects of the industry. For example, a blacksmith can choose to prioritize weapon forging or armor forging again, and become famous for being the best swordsmith on that player’s server.Note that not all crafted items are the same, a new crafting quality level has been added to show that your character uses better materials or Manufactured specifically for that particular item. Equipment can also be used to enhance these trade skills and are automatically equipped when you trade, such as picking herbs or sewing some new cloth armor.

Finally, new crafting orders will allow players to commission various crafters to craft specific items, even those that are soulbound when picked up, making previously non-transferable class-specific items available to anyone who can use them. Those who want to submit a crafting order will open an auction house style window in-game and select the items they want to craft and send them. They can contribute some or all of the materials needed to make the item, as well as any fees the contractor asks to get the job done. Players can shop around for different deals and choose which artisan they want to work with. On the other hand, artisans can make a name for themselves by making orders by offering reasonable prices, the quality of the items they make, and even offering customers some extra goodies.

With the release of Dragonflight, if these ideas are as successful as they currently appear, the entire career system will get a new lease of life. I’ve never been more interested in participating in the World of Warcraft economy, and want crafting and collecting to be a meaningful way to interact with players, rather than a cold auction deal like it is now. These class changes, along with a complete talent rework, are significant changes to the fundamentals of World of Warcraft and should provide a better experience for the game’s player base to grow.
